Old 71

Old71.us is a hyper-local news and information site for folks who live or work around Old 71 in Cedar Creek, Texas. The goal is to give people a place to share, learn, interact, and be a community.

Who

My name is James (LinkedIn). I'm not a journalist—heck I'm barely a writer. If I find something interesting I'll write it down and share it.

Please Help

Right now, it's just me. There's a real chance this goes nowhere, and that's okay. It didn't cost much, and I learned a bit along the way.

If you're interested in helping, email me at [email protected]. I'd love help with anything, but here are some ideas:

  • Write a one-time article about something local or interesting
  • Become a regular contributor
    • Local journalist
    • Opinion columnist
    • Share skills or knowledge
  • Interview someone from the area
  • Share upcoming events
  • Ask a question—we'll try to find an answer
  • Promote a local business
    • No traditional ads, but all for helping locals connect and support each other
    • Starting a business? Please share it!
  • Social media coordinator
  • Website/technical support
  • Basically, anything

What This Isn't

  • Negative: The goal is to build, not tear down. There are plenty of other places to doom-scroll.
  • Ad-obsessed: You'll never see an ad in the middle of an article. If ads ever appear, they'll highlight local businesses or events—not your browsing history.
  • A copy/paste feed: Inspiration and references are great, but everything here will have a local point of view.
  • An echo chamber: There may be opinion pieces, but they'll be respectful and open to discussion. Comments are enabled for every article. As my dad used to say, “If we were all the same, life would be boring.”
  • Artificial: AI tools are useful (and unavoidable), but every line will be reviewed by a real person before publishing.
